Among its many features HIPPARCHUS, allows you to produce star maps and charts in either Mercator or polar projections of any region of the sky, at varying scales, in color or Black-and-White. Stellar positions are rigorously precessed to the equator and equinox of any date, with or without corrections for stellar proper motions. Targeted regions may be selected for display or tabulation either by absolute boundary coordinates, centering on a celestial, or solar system target or on the observer's zenith. Individual stars may be selected based upon position, brightness, proper motions, catalog numbers, spectral type, and/or stellar characteristics such as duplicity and variability. Zoom in or out on targeted regions by interactively choosing the area from the HIPPARCHUS star chart and horizon view windows, or by varying field radii in polar projections. Any or all stars may be annotated with their catalog numbers, Bayer or Flamsted designations, V-magnitudes, spectral types and luminosity classes. Indications of stellar duplicity and variability, and constellations overlays may be applied. Non-stellar objects >From the Messier catalog also may be displayed and annotated. The instantaneous positions, or orbital tracks, of any of the planets, Sun, Moon (drawn to scale, or designated by their symbols), minor planets, comets and artificial Earth-orbiting satellites may also be indicated on any star chart or horizon view when they fall within the selected area boundary for a specified date or range of dates. Click on any stellar target to obtain detailed catalog and instantaneous topocentric, or field centered positional information about that object. Precision ephemerides of solar system targets may be computed geocentrically or topocentrically for any epoch. The precision of the HIPPARCHUS solar system ephemerides is more than sufficient to examine the topocentrically viewed appearance of phenomena such as solar eclipses, planetary transits, and lunar occultations of stars. Search for planetary phenomena such as conjunctions, node crossings, oppositions, orbital extrema, perihelia, aphelia and more. Use the HIPPARCHUS orrery to view the solar system from the north ecliptic pole. The artificial satellite ephemeris computation capability allows you to compute the position, visibility and ground tracks of these objects from their Keplerian orbital elements. Other handy positional tools such as a perpetual graphical ephemeris for the Galilean moons of Jupiter, a visual display of the lunar aspect, and a real-time "world clock" showing the terminator delineating day and night regions of the Earth, the sub-solar and sub-vernal equinoctial points, the demarcation of the longitude at 0h sidereal time, and the sidereal time for a specified observer are also included. It provides keyboard control of all menus, in the MS Word paradigm, but accommodates hierarchical menus and is configurable. Works with the application menu, balloon help, Applescript menus. Other such things I've tried, such as Staircase, I've found buggy. This isn't, even though it's version 1.0 of 1989, and the extensive documentation says the author did most of his testing on a Mac Plus with system 6.0.2. I've been using it for a week on a IIsi, system 7.1, with no problems. Works with Adobe Illustrator 3.2, Finale 3, WordPerfect 3, Filemaker 2, ReadySetGo 5, Canvas 3, Hypercard 2.1. Doesn't work with Symantec's More 3.1, which uses non-standard menus, but doesn't crash. Author says non-standard menu structures may present a problem, and there are many implementations of those, but I have used it on quite a range of programs. I don't use Microsoft programs, though, so I don't know there. No conflicts with my ton of inits, except for Windows 2.1 (sometimes listed as Window), an older cdev that adds a window menu to any app lacking one (use ApplWindows instead). Freeware. I'm sending this by attaching the .sit file to Eudora mail. Let me know if that doesn't work for you, and we can try something else. With (mainframes until very recently) 7-bit dialup, the (necessary) 8th-bit 'quoting' that allows binary downloading more than offsets the file size saving of binary vs binhex. Even with 8-bit transfers, modern V.32bis compression of binhex seems likely to offset the advantage of transferring binary (a binary StuffIT or Compact Pro archive not only isn't very compressible, but just trying to further compress probably wastes time). I've taken to using the CMS BINHEX app to convert HQX to Macbinary before downloading mainly because a vector processing ES9000 CPU does it so much faster than a 68040 :-) I haven't downloaded a large file in both hqx and macbin yet to see if there's any appreciable difference in modem transfer time. I have tried both ClarisWorks 2.0 Demo and ClarisWorks 2.1 Demo on my Color Classic (with DayStar PowerCache 33 MHz accelerator installed running a handful of extensions). The problem is that in the 2.1 Demo, the cursor slows down to about one half its normal speed and if I try to move the mouse fast, the cursor trails and creates a ghost image, a bit annoying to say the least. Funny thing is that this behavior of the cursor is NOT present in the 2.0 Demo. So in upgrading from 2.0 to 2.1, Claris must have changed something to slowdown the cursor on machines like Color Classic. On my Centris 610, there is no such problem. I called the Claris technical support about this and he told me that it was my machine and there is nothing one can do about it. BTW this behavior happens even with all the extensions turned off. So my question is: 1. Has anyone else experienced this? Especially those who use the release version 2.1? Is this common to both the release version and the demo version? 2. There must be a patch that can be written to correct this for the 2.1 since the problem is not there with the 2.0. Does anyone know exactly whatUs wrong or whatUs different about the 2.1 from the 2.0 as far as the cursor control is concerned? Maybe because of this, 2.1 Demo does not seem as robust as 2.0 Demo, and I am assuming the same problem might exist for the release versions. I've had it for about a week and here's the scoop. The card has several interesting options as far as memory, monitors and hard drive options Memory It has one 72 pin SIMM slot (empty) for RAM and it accepts 4, 8, 16, and 32mb SIMMs. (I'm not sure about a 1 mb SIMM) It can also "borrow" memory directly from the Mac. In a 20 mb machine I was able to assign increments of 4mb up to 16mb to the DOS card. The memory control panel will just show a large System Software partition when the DOS card is using the Mac's RAM. Also, you can't both have on-board RAM and share some of the Mac's RAM it's either or. I don't have enough RAM to test if you can assign more than 32mb to the card from a Mac. It shares the RAM with a DMA controller on the card. Monitors The DOS card can share one monitor attached to both cards via a Y cable or it can independently drive a VGA, Apple 13, 14 and 16" monitor. The connector is a standard Mac 15-pin connector. If you use one monitor, the image jumps when you switch but Apple has an option to fade the Mac screen before this happens. When you use two screens you can see both update simultaneously, but when you are in a DOS environment the Mac screen is always slightly dimmed. I tried connecting two Apple 16" displays (one the Mac and one to the card) it worked fine. In fact, with the correct Windows drivers you can easily get 800x600 on the Apple 16". Hard Drives The DOS card comes with PC Exchange 2.0. The major difference in 2.0 is that it has a built-in PC SCSI Probe which allows you to mount PC SCSI discs on your Mac desktop as well as CD drives too. Otherwise you can create a PC partition file on one of your Mac volumes just like SoftPC. PC Exchange 2.0 also reads SoftPC hard drive partitions although the documentation says you can't boot from a SoftPC volume. If you set the LASTDRIVE option in your CONFIG.SYS in DOS, you can assign multiple volumes or folders as shared drives in DOS. Which means you can access your Mac data in DOS by assigning a drive letter to whatever folder you want. The drawback is that DOS supports only 8.3 names so your long Mac names look funny in DOS. Networks The DOS card doesn't support the on-board Ethernet so you can't do Ethernet in DOS/Windows. The documentation doesn't even mention this. Serial Ports The DOS card allows you to use any Mac serial port as a COMx: device in DOS. You have to assign the port in the PC setup and the card opens the port so you can't share a modem between the two without going into PC setup. The card only supports COM1 and COM2. Parallel Port There is no physical parallel printing port available with the card, but the card does emulate a PC printer though LPT1:. There is a PC Print Monitor installed in your extensions folder that prints jobs from the card. Mouse The DOS card doesn't come with a Mouse.COM driver, but the Mac mouse works in Windows. I installed a MOUSE.COM from my Dell and it found and recognized the mouse in DOS applications. Game Port The DOS card monitor card has a 15-pin connector for PC-style joysticks. I don't have one around, but I assume it works. OS's The DOS card comes with a shrinked-wrapped copy of MS-DOS 6.2. If you setup a partition you have to install it. It doesn't come with Windows, but I took a shrink-wrapped copy of Windoze 3.1 and installed it. I haven't tried OS/2 or any x86 Unix but I suppose they would work. Copy & Paste between The DOS card installer includes a utility for the Mac and a PC TSR which converts the Mac clipboard into a DOS clipboard or Windows clipboard and vice-versa. I tried using simple text transfer between both and it worked fine. A little message comes up everytime you switch so I disabled this feature. Macintosh Easy Open The DOS card also comes with Mac Easy Open 1.0.4 to facilitate conversion between the different environment formats. If you need heavy duty conversion you still require a commercial package for this. Mac Easy Open 1.0.4 has another subtle enhancement, it uses the small icon view for icons in open/save dialog listings. This is similar to the DialogView extension. Hacking around Different CPUs? It's supposed to be used only in a Quadra 610 - but I dediced to play around with other machines I have. The card is mounted on a bracket designed for the Quadra 610. It's really just a 040 PDS card plugged into a converter for the Quadra 610 slot. I have verified the card works on a Quadra 700 and Quadra 800. Since the card doesn't have a crystal on-board, the i486sx runs at the same speed the CPU it's plugged into runs, thus 33 Mhz in a Quadra 800. I should note the 040 PDS slots in those machines are well inside and the monitor cable that plugs into the DOS card just hangs out of Nubus slot that is parallel with the PDS slot. On Monitors... One limitation I did find was that the card doesn't support one 16" display on a Quadra 700 - the PC setup control panel just says "wrong type" for the display. Two 16" screens or one 14" screen worked fine. Also if you put the DOS card into a Mac with more than one Mac screen, during the first switch from Mac to DOS the system will freeze. I don't blame that situation since you can't have two Mac screens active on a Quadra 610 anyway ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Apr 1994 11:13:19 EDT From: "Jeffrey N. According to my friend, the printer doesn't have a Localtalk port, but rather a SCSI and an ADB (??!) port. The SE/30 was accessing it through SCSI. How do we get the Classic to talk to the LaserWriter? I have to admit I'm spoiled with my Quadra 800 and HP LaserJet and that's why I can't help her ;-) Kind of like velcro shoelaces... TIA, Wendy L. Hi Alfred, Our company has a product called "Developer's FTP-Kit for the Macintosh" that will give you exactly what you need. It is available both as a C Library and a set of two external functions for 4th Dimension. Two convenient functions FTPSend() and FTPReceive() will allow you to transfer a file from the Mac to any FTP server and vice versa under full program control (IP-Address, UserID, and Password are given as parameteres, so there is absolutely NO interaction with the user necessary!). Extensive error reporting is also included and an optional progress bar can be displayed to keep the user informed. The price is US$ 79.-, payment is accepted via credit card (Visa, MC, AmEx, Diners, JCB). If you are interested, send e-mail to or give us a call at +43 (1) 545-5155 and I'll forward our detailed product and order information to you. You can also fax us at +43 (1) 545-5155-9. It works fine for me on a IIsi with 7.01. I keep most fonts, most DAs, FKEYs, and sounds in folders outside my system folder. I do, however, keep Monaco, Geneva, and Chicago in the System. Makes them all easier (IMHO) to manage, and helps reduce the size of the system folder a bit. Disadvantages? It tends to break with new releases of system software or new Macs, and the updates, which are available on-line, sometimes take a couple of days (;-)) to appear. And, it costs money. Yes it works, yes it easy to change suitcases any time, no I have not found any problems with it, yes it does exactly what you want and this is exactly what it is for, and *why* the heck doesn't system 7.1 work more or less this way already? I was really looking forward to the "Fonts Folder" which 7.1 introduced, and was really disappointed when it turned out that you couldn't take something *out* of that folder while any applications were running. Since I use several Startup utilities, applications are *always* running on my machine. IMHO the Fonts Folder is no improvement at all over the "openable" System introduced with 7.0. Use Suitcase!
